  • Sun Safety

    Sun 10 Jul 2022

    Dear Parents and Carers,

With the temperatures forecast to reach up to 31° tomorrow we wanted to reassure you about the additional measures that will be in place in school and how you can best support us in keeping your child safe.

The main risk from heat is dehydration (not having enough water in the body). However, if sensible precautions are taken children are unlikely to be adversely affected by hot conditions.  Please be reassured however that, teachers, assistants, will look out for signs of heat stress, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

The following additional measures will be in place tomorrow and this week:

    • As the temperatures are forecast to be very high, staff supervising break and lunch times will reduce the amount of time spent outside by bringing children inside to play with friends for the remainder of break time.  When outside children will be taken into the shade whenever possible / appropriate
    • Access to water – children are encouraged to take water bottles with them wherever they go during the summer term so that they do not become dehydrated. Please ensure your child has a water bottle.
    • Sun cream – members of staff remind children to re-apply sun cream before outdoor break times. If children are able to wear the longer lasting 8h protection this is also advisable.  Please ensure your child has sun cream before coming to school.
    • Children should wear loose, light-coloured clothing to help keep cool and sunhats with wide brims to avoid sunburn. Please ensure your child has a hat.
    • Children will not take part in vigorous physical activity on very hot days, such as when temperatures are in excess of 30°C
    • We will open windows as early as possible in the morning before children arrive.  We will almost close windows when the outdoor air becomes warmer than the air indoors and make use of blinds. Several classrooms have air conditioning and fans which will also be used.

Please do email me if you do have any further concerns,

    Claire Bills

  • Marvellous Monday 27th June

    Mon 27 Jun 2022

We waved good bye to Junior 2 this morning as they headed off on their residential feeling very excited!

It has been a great week at Gunthorpe last week with some more amazing writing across the school being celebrated.

Infant 1- Georgie - for fantastic reading. Georgie is only in preschool but has such a lovely of letters and reading that she has already moved onto ditty books!

Corey- for being increasingly confident at writing his name. Corey is also a preschooler but when asked to write his name on his work for the first time he did it without his name card to help him last week. Mrs Findlay was so impressed!

Infant 2- Claudie, Teddy and Henry- for some fantastic writing including character description and settings. You all worked really hard to include exciting adjectives and conjunctions.

Junior 1- Alyssa, Georgie and Jake - you all really impressed Miss Bottrell and Mrs Brown with your character descriptions of the 2 main characters in the book you have just read Manyam and Nyasha.  Alyssa and Georgie had included subordinating clauses, apostrophes and expanded noun phrases. Jake your presentation was superb- we know you can do it now!

  • Terrific Tuesday 21st June

    Tue 21 Jun 2022

This weeks celebration assembly was today and it was lovely to hear all about the fantastic work the children are producing especially in English as you will see!

Infant 1- Layla and Pippa had produced some fantastic maps using lots of the symbols from OS maps incuding railways, churches, houses and sea. Everyone loved seeing them.

Infant 2- Wade, Winky, Archie and Sebby all wrote amazing stories about an alien and a cat - they are really humorous so do have a read below!

Kitty also was recieved a certificate for being the first year 1 to be rewarded with a special pencil for the quality of the presentation of her work!

Junior 1- Mrs Brown and Miss Bottrell were blown away with the quality of Lissie and Ella S's writing.  Both girls were given a picture as a prompt but the descriptive language is absolutely beautiful. Again I would urge you to read it below- if this is what you can produce in year 4 girls we can't wait to read your writing next year in Junior 2!

Junior 2- Oliver, Polly and Leon wrote some fantastic persuasive letters all about recycling. This fitted really well into the assembly we had on World Ocean's Day looking at how we all play our part respecting our world and making a difference.

A huge well done to all children and we can't wait to see what everyone is getting up to this week!

FoGS kindly had some medals engraved for all the children who took part this year - they look amazing! A big thank you to Mrs Brown and Miss Bottrell for organising and taking the children.

Year 5/6 also went on a football multi-skills festival and received their certificates in assembly this morning.  Many children from Gunthorpe are part of Beavers and Cubs groups and it was lovely to celebrate with those that had taken part in the St George's parades across the county yesterday. They all received a service pebble leaving only 2 remaining before a whole school treat!

    On to our certificates.

Infant 1- Layla M and Pippa were both in for their fantastic writing. Pippa for taking such care with her handwriting and Layla for writing with such confidence and independence.  Such a joy to see!

Infant 2- Bella for being the child Mrs Owen's could not be without! She is so helpful, kind but also working so hard!

Dax and Wade were also in receipt of awards today for their positive attitude to learning and for such enthusiasm when they face a new challenge!

Junior 1- Well done to Rhys and Dylan for fantastic reading comprehension work. They had to predict and infer information about their new class text and they were brilliant at using clues they had already read about in their answers.

Rex also had a fantastic easter reading over 11 books on bug club! What determination!

Junior 2- Huge well done to Amy and Lucy for their multiplying fractions work, especially with mixed numbers.  Krishan and Isobel from year 6 then continued the maths theme with their success multiplying and dividing fractions last week.

  • Marvellous Monday 14th March

    Mon 14 Mar 2022

Last week was a really special week at Gunthorpe as we had the opportunity to give lots of donations to Ukraine and track Mrs Owen's husband as he drove a van to the Polish border with Ukraine. A separate news item provides further details or do look at our Facebook/ twitter pages to see more.

We also welcomed parents into school for parents evening which went really well. It is so lovely for parents to be able to look through children's books and discuss how well their child is getting on at school.

This Thursday is red nose day - we look forward to sampling lots of masterchef entries which will then be sold to raise money for Comic Relief. Children can come wearing red and crazy hair or dress to express themselves! Donations of cash or via parent pay all welcome.

  • Sending aid to Ukraine

    Mon 14 Mar 2022

A huge thank you to all those parents who have so generously provided last week aid for those in Ukraine. Mrs Owen's husband left last Tuesday morning and provided us with updates of his progress from Southwell to the Polish border with Ukraine.  All the children in the school also made cards that were given out to children and families.

We had a very special call with Andy as he was unloading the van at the border for all the children to see their donations be transported onto a larger lorry. We heard how one large lorry was being filled every hour with donations to be taken into Ukraine, this really put some perspective on how great the need is.  The children were incredibly respectful and it made a big difference to see how they could help at this difficult time.
