Maths Vision

At Gunthorpe C of E Primary School, we believe every child can succeed in mathematics. Through a teaching for mastery approach, pupils develop secure, deep and connected understanding, alongside fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Learning is carefully sequenced, inclusive and ambitious, enabling all children to persevere, think mathematically and let their light shine while learning together in a supportive and respectful environment.

Our mathematics curriculum is underpinned by the White Rose Maths programme, which supports our teaching for mastery approach and provides a carefully sequenced progression of learning. This ensures that pupils develop secure, deep and connected understanding of mathematical concepts, alongside fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.

White Rose Maths enables a consistent and inclusive approach to teaching, with high expectations for all pupils. Teachers use White Rose as a core framework, while drawing on a range of high-quality resources and professional judgement to adapt lessons, meet the needs of all learners and provide appropriate challenge and support. Through this ambitious and coherent curriculum, pupils are encouraged to persevere, think mathematically and learn together in a supportive and respectful environment, enabling them to ‘let their light shine’ as confident mathematicians.

At Gunthorpe C of E Primary School, we use the White Rose Maths calculation policies to guide how children learn written and mental methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These methods are taught in a clear, step-by-step way, helping children understand why calculations work, not just how to complete them.

Children begin by using practical equipment and visual models before moving on to more formal written methods. This approach builds confidence, supports deeper understanding and helps children choose efficient strategies as they progress.  These approaches are designed to develop strong mathematical foundations and long-term success.
