  • Spellings

Each Tuesday, children will be given a list of spellings to learn, and these will be tested the following Tuesday. Our spellings will cover Common Exception Words, days of the week, numbers written in words and words with tricky phonemes in. We will work through these words systematically. Once the children have learnt a set of words, we will revisit them later in a mixed order to help strengthen their long-term memory and ensure the spellings are securely embedded.

We encourage regular practice at home. Some fun ways to learn spellings include:

Rainbow spelling – write each word several times using different coloured pencils

    Look, Cover, Write, Check

    Writing words in a sentence

    Creating a word search

Spelling words aloud to a family member

Using magnetic letters or letter tiles to build words

    Practising with flashcards

Regular short practice sessions are often more effective than one long session. Thank you for supporting your child with their spelling learning at home.
