Phonics teaching in school
Phonics is a strategy of teaching used to develop reading skills. It involves breaking down words into their constituent sounds. At Gunthorpe School we have a whole school approach to the teaching of phonics. We use a system called ‘Letters and sounds’ further up the school this becomes ‘Support for Spelling’ and further down school the youngest children are introduced to this through ‘Jolly Phonics’ which is a kinaesthetic approach to the teaching of sounds. Each sound has an attendant action.
Children are grouped according to ability and move into Phonics groups several times during the week. Assessment of their phonic knowledge is made at regular intervals and there is an opportunity for children to move up the groups throughout the year. The impact of this system has been tremendous and reading progress at Gunthorpe is outstanding.
