Link Ethiopia

We are excited to be able to share with you an exciting new venture for the children at Gunthorpe Primary and their families.  We have recently been lucky enough to be able to invest in a year-long commitment with the charity ‘Link Ethiopia’ to raise funds and provide much needed financial support for children in an area of the world affected by poverty.

Our funds have been specifically chosen to launch a brand new project called the ‘Donkey Library’ which pays for a donkey, books and a librarian enabling much needed books and vital learning resources to be delivered to children in the most rural and remote locations in Ethiopia.

Not only is this an amazing opportunity to raise awareness and money for such a worthwhile cause, we believe this is a great opportunity to participate in something on a whole school level and use it as a chance to broaden the knowledge of our pupils by researching and gaining insight into a country of stark contrast and diversity to our own.

On Tuesday 15th October the entire school will take part in an ‘Experience Ethiopia’ Day in which the children are invited to wear the colours of the Ethiopian flag.  We are asking for a donation of £1 to kick start our fundraising in exchange for the children coming in non-school uniform.  The children will then experience a variety of workshops throughout the day that cover areas across the whole curriculum; art, design and technology, history, geography, sports, cooking, music, dance etc.

Our school cook Claire has also got on board and put her culinary creativity to great use.  She will be providing a school dinner to complement our ‘Ethiopia Experience’ Day…look out for brightly coloured biscuits and the Ethiopian flag!

On Thursday 17th October we will be holding an ‘Experience Ethiopia’ assembly for parents and families to share our discoveries, knowledge and projects.  Parents and families are invited into school from 8.50am drop off for coffee and to browse the many things that will be on display in the hall.  At 9.15am the children will perform group presentations to the whole school and their families.  Please do come along and bring your friends and family members to show your support.  Don’t forget to bring your purses and wallets as there will be items on sale, the proceeds of which will go to the charity.

We have also scheduled more fundraising events throughout the school year and will be releasing more information nearer the time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank FOGS for their enthusiasm with supporting the school in this exciting new opportunity and for enabling us to launch the project.
